Freight Forwarding Operations Manager

Our client is one of the world's leading providers of forwarding and logistics services, specialising in intercontinental airfreight and sea freight consignments and the associated supply chain management solutions. Providing global integrated door-to-door forwarding solutions tailored to its clients' individual needs. The company operates a global network with 480 branches in 74 countries employing over 12,000 people worldwide.

We now have an opportunity for a Freight Forwarding Operations Manager at their South Manchester facility near Manchester Airport

The Freight Operations Manager has responsibility for the operational and financial performance of the Manchester freight forwarding branch operation reporting to the Branch Manager. The role will be directly responsible for providing a high-quality service whilst meeting financial targets. The Freight Operations Manager must ensure all UK Customers are serviced in line with business expectations and key performance indicators, whilst working on commercial development, responsible for operational quality and financial performance.

Handling Air, Sea both Import and Export and including cross trade. The location is heavier on Import. The Operations Manager will be overseeing all of the supervisors/managers and driving improvements / implementing the changes across the branch, working with commercial team, developing our internal talent with a high focus on financial as-well.

The Freight Operations Manager has a very varied role and requires someone who is extremely well organised and familiar with how a freight forwarding business operates. Working as a Freight Operations Manager also requires someone with an outgoing personality and capable of negotiating with external agencies and maintaining business relationships, confident with leading a team and developing talent.

You will be responsible for managing department budgets and will also be involved in setting targets in association with other senior managers.
The Freight Operations Manager is expected to prepare reports on the performance of the branch and suggest and implement ongoing improvements in line with business processes that will enhance the customer experience and companys profit margins and as well as work closely with other senior department heads for the benefit of the company.
Negotiate with suppliers and internal functions or distribution networks to determine tariffs which should be in the interests of the company at all times.
Develop and maintain business relationships with both customers and suppliers.
Providing hands on support to the branch, advise and share industry knowledge, assist with staff training and development, acting as a mentor and positive role model, leading by example at all times.
Ensuring that there is regular & effective communication through team briefings
Deal with a variety of commodities for all shipments.
Understand the whole life cycle of the shipments
Deal with all queries quickly and efficiently.
Liaise with overseas agents and hauliers.
Build good working relationships with both customers and colleagues.
Meet and surpass branch KPIs
Occasional travel as required

You will need to have a proven track record in freight forwarding as a supervisor or similar
Strong decision-making skills
Excellent attention to detail skills
Ability to build, lead and motivate a skilled team able to meet objectives and agreed targets
Proven management skills with the ability to optimise team performance and development
Experience using Cargowise systems
Excellent problem solving, planning & organising skills.
Excellent communication/telephone skills. Strong administrative and customer service skills.
Ability to work under pressure using own initiative.
Proficient in Microsoft Excel/Word/Powerpoint
Understand and comply with all relevant Company rules, agreements, policies, procedures and with all relevant legislative requirements and codes of practice.
Ensure Company business is treated in the strictest confidence and not disclosed to persons outside the Company.

Salary £40,000 - £45,000 circa
